So for most of my life I’ve lived near a carnival that comes once a year. Of course living in Massachusetts it’s not always warm enough to go, because ya know… New England weather is basically bipolar. But when my good friend suggested we go, (mostly because she wanted a fire instagram opp lol) I couldn’t say no! Honestly though, who can turn down carnival treats! The cotton candy, popcorn, fried dough, and candy apples were calling my name.
Even though now I’m adulting we had a blast at the carnival. We took pics, rode some rides and got so many treats that I could barely hold them in my hand. We left right before it started to rain and it was safe to say the night was a success. The next day however was the last day of the carnival and that night, just as I was about to post some of the photos we took on Facebook, me and my mom heard tons of sirens going through our neighborhood – one after the other. We knew something pretty bad had to have happened.
We later found out on the news that there were gunshots at the carnival. There was horrifying footage of people running out of the carnival trying to get to their cars and into safety, grabbing hold of their children and loved ones for dear life. I was completely shocked, devastated, and extremely angered by this. It was such a beautiful day and it was the very last day of the carnival. I had so much fun and so many people go out there to enjoy themselves and bring their families and friends. It just makes me so upset to know that someone would actually go out of their way and try to cause harm to people at a carnival, which is supposed to be a safe place. Luckily from what I heard no one was killed but I’m not sure if anyone was injured. Either way it was something that should have never happened.
It obviously makes me think about what would have happened if we decided to go to the next day. What if we got hurt? It’s so scary to think about. It’s sad that we actually live in a world where we have to worry about our safety basically everywhere we go. Places we once thought were safe environments aren’t safe anymore.
It’s awful that there’s just so much negativity in the world and bad things happening everywhere you go. There’s always just so much going on in the news and it’s hard to wrap your head around it all.
It’s important for all of us to try to stay positive and hopeful for the future. I know we can get through it just like Generations in the past have been able to do. It’s our duty to try to make the world a better place as daunting as a task that may seem. I hope there will be progress and more change especially with gun laws so that safe places can remain safe.
